History of the Oro Valley Business Club

The Oro Valley Business Club traces its origins to a group of community-minded entrepreneurs who believed in the power of collaboration, support, and shared knowledge among local businesses. Since its inception in 2012, the Club has played a pivotal role in fostering business growth and building lasting connections across Oro Valley, Arizona. Through its grassroots approach, the Club has continually demonstrated that when business owners work together, they create opportunities not only for themselves, but for the entire community.

Founding and Early Days

The spark that ignited the Oro Valley Business Club began in late 2011, when longtime resident Henry “Hank” Jepsen gathered a small circle of business owners and professionals.

With decades of experience and a genuine passion for his hometown, Jepsen envisioned a space where entrepreneurs could meet in an informal, welcoming environment. His goal was to offer something distinct from traditional business organizations: a group where newcomers and established leaders alike could share insights, build relationships, and help one another succeed.

Soon after, Jepsen partnered with Gregory Lopeman, a well-known publisher and local media entrepreneur. Lopeman brought to the table a deep understanding of community engagement and communication, helping set the tone for what the Club would become. Their early discussions focused on breaking down barriers eliminating high dues, red tape, and exclusive practices that often keep small business owners on the outside looking in. From the start, the Club’s philosophy was rooted in openness and peer support.

The first meetings were small but meaningful, drawing a diverse group of business professionals representing various industries. Among the original attendees was Mark Finchem, a realtor who would go on to serve as the Club’s first President and later become an Arizona legislator. These founding members created a welcoming forum for exchanging ideas, referrals, and real-world advice, quickly earning the Club a reputation as a valuable resource within Oro Valley’s growing business community.

Formal Incorporation and Organizational Growth

As the Club gained momentum, it became clear that a formal structure was needed to support its growth and ensure sustainability. In April 2012, the Oro Valley Business Club was officially incorporated as a nonprofit business league under IRS section 501(c)(6). This move underscored the founders’ commitment to serving the local business community with transparency, accountability, and a spirit of volunteerism.

Incorporation allowed the Club to operate with a clear mission and structure while maintaining its inclusive, barrier-free approach. Membership remained open to all business owners, entrepreneurs, and community leaders without burdensome fees or administrative hurdles. Monthly luncheon meetings soon became the Club’s signature event, providing an accessible venue for members to connect, learn from guest speakers, and stay up to date on the latest community developments.

These luncheons offered more than just networking. They created an environment where seasoned professionals and new entrepreneurs could engage in candid conversations, seek mentorship, and forge partnerships that often extended beyond the meeting room. Over time, the Club’s calendar expanded to include educational workshops, social gatherings, and community service projects, reflecting its evolving role in Oro Valley.

Founding Members and Leadership Legacy

The Club’s early success is a direct result of the vision and dedication of its founding members and first leaders. Hank Jepsen served as both the founder and statutory agent, guiding the Club with a steady hand and a strong sense of purpose. Gregory Lopeman played a pivotal role as co-founder, bringing valuable media experience and innovative ideas for outreach and engagement.

As the Club evolved, Mark Finchem assumed the role of first President, lending both organizational expertise and a deep understanding of the needs facing small business owners. The Club also benefited from the contributions of early members such as Brittany Palma, Brenda Martinez, Paul Parisi, Jerry Simmons, and Jay McCall. Each individual brought unique skills and perspectives, shaping the Club’s direction and strengthening its reputation as an inclusive, community-driven organization.

Leadership has always been volunteer-based, emphasizing the Club’s “by locals, for locals” ethos. Board members and officers have consistently devoted their time and expertise to planning events, recruiting new members, and building connections with other community organizations.
